Please click here to read the comic! This is just a teaser, the full thing is far too large for tumblr to display it properly (and tumblr won’t even show you the full-size preview… *shakes fist* Tumblrrrr!!!)
Four out of six Kid Lokis agree that if you’re going to be in a panel, crying is the way to go! Yes, I am sorry internet, Kid Loki crying is over-represented in my fan comic, but that’s the way it’s gotta be! ‘Cuz boy the emotions be rollin’ heavy in this one. To be fair, he has a lot of reasons to - one of them being a certain asshole bird that likes to keep his acquaintance.
This piece has been a long time coming (and contains spoilers for the end of the Kid Loki arc so avert thine eyes if you haven’t read it)! Let me start by saying that I really enjoyed the Kid Loki arc of Journey into Mystery. I don’t read as many comics these days, but when I hear enough good things about a particular series I will gladly delve in. Back in October I read issue 645, the fateful final issue, on the day it was released and as I was driving around an hour or so later I was, of course, still thinking about it. As you already know, or may have heard, it was a fantastic and heartbreaking end to an amazing run deftly written by Kieron Gillen, and this time around Stephanie Hans (who usually creates the cover art) illustrated the whole issue. I really admire Stephanie Hans’ work, and its incredibly refreshing to see such a unique style bring a comic book to life when there is often such uniformity to the genre. The visual style was brilliant, and the quality of the art allowed the conclusion to realize its full of impact. So as I said, I was driving when Dark Come Soon by Tegan and Sara came up on my music player. My thoughts were a distant churning of road, comic imagery, and song lyrics. In a very short span of time I was bombarded with the idea to make this tribute strip. It started with a few scenes conjured from a lyric here and there, and a bit of listening and thinking brought me to the final arrangement you see here. I sketched the thumbnails and paired the lyrics, abandoned it temporarily for the duty of grad school, and finally returned to finish it months later!
Since this strip was inspired by the bold images that Hans crafted, I decided that some of the panels would be best if they were my novice attempts to recreate and reference key aspects of her depictions. This is a mixture of some original imagery (panels 1, 5 and 9) and highly recognizable recreations of her fantastic panel art (panels 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10), and so I do not wish to claim credit for the inspiration or composition of those scenes. For those, I just attempted to capture a little of that brilliance, editorializing here and there to fit the visuals to the lyrics and the long vertical format, or selecting elements of a scene presented in isolation to emphasize a theme. At certain points I stopped working from reference with them and just had fun. Please join me under the cut, I’d like to tell you more about my choices and intent but to take up more of your dash would be unconscionable!
!!! Man I don’t even know the context but HEARTSTRINGS A-TUGGIN’ ANYWAY??????? Great job, and kudos on your exhaustive conceptual examination, VS.
